World Athletics to award prize money at Olympic Games

Even though the Olympics has become the most well-known sporting event in the world, it has remained an amateur event, that is, an event where athletes aren’t paid to compete.

World Athletics is set to change this.

Officials of athletics said it give $2.4 million to gold medallists this year across 48 events. Relay teams will divide the $50,000 between their members.

Athletes who win silver and bronze medals will get prize money at the next Olympic Games in 2028.
